What they're
actually getting
That gap is why so many young athletes are always tired, sore + injured.
They don't have a toughness problem or a talent problem. They have a Recovery Gap.
The space between what their body needs and what they're actually getting.
A young athlete's body has 3 jobs: everyday life, growing, AND training. When there isn't enough fuel for all 3, something gets cut.
It's SO subtle and sneaky -- usually written off as attitude, growing pains, or "just a bad game."
Based on the 2023 International Olympic Committee (IOC) consensus statement on Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs).
Always sick, nagging or repeat injuries, stress fractures, low iron.
Growth or puberty slowing down. Late or missing periods in girls.
Stomach aches, bloating, wiped out -- or can't sleep.
Teary or HANGRY after practice, foggy, losing focus.
Dead by the end of practice, losing speed or power, stuck on a plateau.
One sign on its own? Keep an eye on it. A few together? That's the pattern we look for.
When the gap gets big enough, it has a name
REDs: Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport
REDs happens when an athlete doesn't eat enough to cover training AND growing. It shows up in boys and girls, in every sport -- and almost never because anyone meant to under-eat.
Stress fractures or injuries that keep coming back
Growth or puberty slowing down
Late, missing or irregular periods
Always sick, tired or stuck on a plateau
Our team works alongside sports medicine doctors on REDs cases.
