💪🏻 Respect body diversity

There is no one “gymnast body”

And your gymnast’s “best body” will be the one where she’s fed properly, adequately, and has a healthy relationship with food.

Parents don’t often want to hear about the last part…

It’s not “sexy” to talk about a “healthy relationship with food” in this sport.

People don’t care.
 They want gymnasts to be little machines who do what they’re told, eat what they’re told, and often act like robots.

But, that’s just not the reality of working with adolescents. LOL.

And often, we try to strong-arm our gymnasts into doing what we think is “best”…

And it often backfires in a BIG way.

So many high level gymnasts end up heavier and with increased body fat after people intervene and try to get them to “tone up, lose weight, lean out”.

And no one talks about this and the rates of diet failure and weight/body fat regain + overshoot.

Gymnasts often end their careers cloaked in shame…thinking they just “couldn’t do it” when in reality, we failed them.

Learning to fuel THROUGH puberty and keep it focused on performance is one of the most protective things that can actually help your gymnast.

Gymnasts who are massively underfueled (usually unintentional when they’re younger) often end up with worse body composition when they’re older and when it matters most (i.e. more body fat, less muscle mass, lower bone density).

So, if you want your gymnast to be strong and with an optimal power to weight ratio when they’re older…

You must invest in learning to fuel them properly NOW.

There are the major long-term ramifications of underfueling that no one talks about.

And we have to keep the long-game in mind. And, remember that bodies change. That is a fact.

Preparation for next season starts NOW.  Learning to fuel for optimal performance and injury prevention cannot wait any longer.  

If you want your gymnasts to have that “edge”, they have to focus on nutrition.  

Parents tell me all the time they wish they’d learned about fueling their gymnasts a long time ago.  

Coaches feel frustrated and worry about saying the “wrong things” to their gymnasts.  

When 15-18 year old gymnasts come to work with me, many who are trying to get D1 scholarships or have big elite goals and dreams…

  It’s often almost too late…  

They needed nutrition education and support YEARS ago. Fueling the gymnast for optimal performance begins at a young age.

There’s nothing worse than watching your gymnast

There’s nothing worse than watching your gymnast seem to move in slow-mo on competition day. They’ve been performing so well in the gym, and yet on competition day they don’t even look like the same gymnast.

Many gymnast’s struggle with their performance on competition day because they’re not fueling their body with the right foods at the right times for optimal performance.
 I would get really nervous and struggle to eat before a competition as a gymnast, and remember feeling light-headed, shaky, heavy, and slow (especially on beam/floor) at meets.

And as you can imagine, I didn’t perform nearly as well as I practiced in the gym.  

There’s a lot to be said for mental training and sports psychology to help with pre-competition nerves and anxiety…  But those strategies won’t work to their full potential if the brain is underfueled.  

The good news is there are a lot of different nutrition strategies we employ if you’re too nervous for regular meals/snacks leading up to meet…  

And at the same time, the gut is “trainable” and this is something a dietitian can help you gymnast with so that they can fuel their body for their best performance.

You know what they say about doing the same thing

You know what they say about doing the same thing over and over again…

…and expecting a different result.

Time for some #realtalk😉

The average level 9/10/elite gymnast parent will pay 20-35K+ a year💸

That’s more than half my first salary as a clinical dietitian 🤯

One of my gym parents just sent me a breakdown of what they have paid this year for their level 9…

And working with us to learn how to optimize her gymnast’s nutrition was only 6% of their total expenses…

And, her kid is healthy‼️ Doesn’t have weekly PT, sports psych, chiro, massage, etc cost that would add up even more.
 It’s a privilege to do this sport 💗

Investing in nutrition is like a insurance policy for your gymnast.

There’s a reason we are encouraged to have health insurance here in the US.

A visit to the ER, a broken leg, or a mental health issue could cost you 10K, 20K, 50K, 100K+ if you have to pay out of pocket.

But with insurance, you may pay nothing or a few hundred to a thousand dollars (which pales in comparison).

(And, this is why we accept health insurance in our practice which can go towards a portion of our program fees).

When it comes to underfueling, injuries, and gymnastics…

Why *wouldn’t* you do everything you can to help maximize and protect your investment in this sport?

No, we can’t prevent all injuries and not all injuries are related to nutrition.

BUT MOST OF THEM ARE

And the worst part? Many parents are paying this much and their gymnast hasn’t even competed a single time this year…

So, before you shell out another $1000-3000+ for summer camps, new leotards, privates, etc…

Stop and consider the cost of NOT making sure your gymnast’s nutrition is in check and giving her what she needs to support ongoing repair, recovery + growth/development which are all KEYS to longevity in this sport.

Get to the root-cause of the injury and make sure you have all your ducks in a row to support a safe + speedy comeback and help prevent future injury or re-injury.

Do you have a gymnast (or coach gymnasts) on ADHD

Do you have a gymnast (or coach gymnasts) on ADHD medication?

Do you struggle to get them to eat enough throughout the day and worry they aren’t fueled for practice?   Are they struggling to grow and develop as they should, and you wonder if it’s related to the medication or to gymnastics (or both)?

You are not alone.

Many gymnasts with ADHD struggle to get enough nutrition due to mediation side effects, busy school and training schedules, and often picky eating thrown in the mix.

Fueling the gymnast with ADHD and navigating appetite suppressing medications is a challenge.

First off, be sure to have a thorough and proper assessment and diagnosis by a trained pediatric/adolescent psychologist/psychiatrist.

ADHD medications (stimulants and non-stimulants) are not without risk, and it’s way too common for a doctor to diagnose without proper testing due to parent concerns or teacher/coaches reports of “bad behavior” or “lack of focus” that aren’t actually ADHD.

Underfueling can lead to major issues with focus, attention, energy, and mood/emotion regulation. This is because the brain cannot function optimally when it’s just trying to keep the vital organs alive (when not provide with adequate nutrition).

High level gymnasts train as much or more than a part time job (20+ hours a week) and that is a LOT of calories that are need to support normal growth, development, adaptation to training, and recovery. This is why extra support is needed to make sure they are properly fueled.
