Walk through any grocery store, and you will find an entire aisle of colorful bottles promising hydration, energy, and performance that influencers love to promote or talk about online. For gymnastics parents, the question is almost always the same: Does my gymnast actually need any of this, or is water enough?
The answer is not one-size-fits-all. It depends on training level, practice length, gym environment, and your gymnast’s individual needs. Let’s break it all down.
Before deciding whether your gymnast needs one, it helps to know what a true sports drink actually is, because a lot of what is marketed as a “sports drink” does not qualify.
By definition, a sports drink is a 6 to 8% carbohydrate solution combined with a specific electrolyte profile, primarily sodium, potassium, and chloride, sometimes with small amounts of calcium and magnesium added as well.
Classic examples that fit this definition: Gatorade and Powerade. Both were formulated with a very specific purpose: to replace fluids, electrolytes, and carbohydrates lost during intense, prolonged activity.
There are also boutique sports drink options, brands like Scratch Labs and Tailwind, which are popular with endurance athletes. Their products tend to be slightly higher in electrolytes than standard Gatorade but serve a similar purpose: carbohydrate and electrolyte replacement during extended exercise.
Here’s the science put simply:: when you sweat heavily, you lose not just water but electrolytes, especially sodium. At a certain point, your cells cannot absorb plain water efficiently anymore because your electrolyte balance is off.
Sports drinks solve this through what are called sodium-glucose co-transporters, essentially cellular toll booths that open only when both glucose (sugar) and sodium are present together. This is exactly why effective sports drinks contain both carbohydrates and sodium. No carbs plus no sodium equals no real sports drink, regardless of what the label says.
This is where blanket rules become a problem.
You have probably heard coaches or other parents say things like “gymnasts don’t need sports drinks” or “no Gatorade at practice.” While the intention may be reasonable, an all-or-nothing rule does not hold up and can create unnecessary tension around nutrition choices.
The real question is not whether sports drinks are allowed. It is whether your gymnast’s training actually warrants intra-workout fueling in the first place.
Recreational gymnasts training 3 to 4 hours at lower intensity probably do not need a sports drink. Water is sufficient for these athletes.
Competitive gymnasts, think Level 5 through elite, training 4 or more hours a day at high intensity, are a different story. At that training volume, carbohydrate replacement mid-practice is not a luxury. It is a performance necessity. A sports drink is one valid option for delivering that carbohydrate.
The key threshold: intra-workout fueling typically becomes important around the 2-hour mark of training, with smaller amounts taken every 45 to 60 minutes after that. This is best absorbed in small, frequent sips or bites rather than one big snack break.
A sports drink is one way to deliver carbohydrates mid-practice. It is not the only way. If your gym allows food on the floor (which they should!), there are plenty of food-based alternatives that work just as well. For intra-workout fueling, you want low-fat, low-fiber carbohydrate sources that digest quickly, including:
Yes, this includes processed snacks, and that is intentional. Easy digestibility is the point. The sports drink only becomes the primary option when food simply is not accessible during practice.

This is more common than it should be in my opinion, and worth addressing directly.
Gyms often have no-food policies due to hygiene concerns such as pest issues, messy lockers, or stained carpet. Those concerns are valid. But a blanket food ban for competitive gymnasts training 4 or more hours is not just inconvenient. It can affect an athlete’s health and safety, which is a Safe Sport concern.
Some practical middle grounds coaches and clubs can consider:
If you are navigating this situation with your gym, it helps to come prepared with a note from your gymnast’s dietitian or doctor and frame it as an education opportunity rather than a confrontation. This is where marketing gets confusing. Here is a straight breakdown of the most common products parents ask about.
Not a sports drink. Prime contains no sodium and no carbohydrates, which are two of the three defining features of a true sports drink. It is also not an oral rehydration solution. Technically, it is flavored water with potassium and B vitamins. Potassium is beneficial, but it is not enough on its own for athletes sweating through a long practice.
Almost, but not quite. Body Armor does contain carbohydrates, which puts it closer to a sports drink. However, it does not contain sodium, so it still falls short of the standard. Body Armor Light follows the same pattern as Prime, with no carbs and no sodium.
These are oral rehydration solutions, not sports drinks. They typically contain about half the carbohydrate of a standard Gatorade but significantly more sodium and electrolytes. They were originally designed for illness recovery, such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or hospital-level dehydration.
That said, some competitive gymnasts do benefit from these products, particularly athletes with POTS-like symptoms (Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome), which can cause dizziness and near-fainting during or after practice. Gymnasts with POTS often need higher sodium intake than average, and an oral rehydration solution can be part of that strategy.
A simpler first step for many gymnasts, however, is simply making sure adequate salt is used in everyday cooking.
Many families eating “clean” overlook this, not realizing that athletes have significantly higher sodium needs than the general population. If your gymnast is experiencing dizziness or positional fainting, that warrants a conversation with her doctor and sports dietitian rather than just switching her drink.
When you are standing in the sports nutrition aisle, check the label for three things:
If the product has no sodium and no carbs, it will not replace what is lost in a long gymnastics practice, regardless of how well it is marketed.
Every gymnast is different. These variables all matter when building a hydration strategy:

Here is something important that often gets lost in the sports drink conversation: your gymnast cannot out-hydrate a nutrition deficit.
No amount of Gatorade or Liquid IV compensates for going into practice under-fueled, skipping recovery nutrition after training, or chronically not eating enough throughout the day. Intra-workout hydration is the third step, not the first.
The foundation looks like this:
Step 1: Eat enough overall. Total daily intake has to support growth, development, training, and recovery. Summer is especially tricky with gymnastics in the morning, the pool in the afternoon, and dinner at night, leaving a massive calorie gap that no sports drink can fill. Getting the first two steps right will take your gymnast 90% of the way there. The sports drink conversation only becomes fully relevant once the foundation is solid.
