In August 2025, we did something we had never done before. We offered a gymnast fueling audit to parents who wanted a professional set of eyes on their gymnast’s nutrition, growth, and injury history without committing to a full programme. Fifteen families took us up on it. The results were not surprising to our team. But they were staggering enough that I think every gymnastics parent needs to hear them, especially if your gymnast is at level five, six, seven, or eight. You have been wondering whether underfueling is something you actually need to worry about yet.
Here at The Gymnast Nutritionist, the answer we see again and again is: Yes. Earlier than most parents expect.
Working one-on-one with our team normally happens through our The Balanced Gymnast Program, which includes multiple sessions over several months. That timeline exists for a reason. Sorting through a gymnast’s nutrition history, growth trajectory, performance patterns, and injury record takes real time. You cannot do it in a single appointment.
But we also know that a lot of parents are listening to this podcast, following along on Instagram, and reading every blog post they can find on Nutrition for Gymnasts, and still wondering: Is this actually my child? Is she underfueled? Do we have a problem?
The fueling audit was designed to give those families a meaningful answer without the full program commitment. Parents submitted their gymnast’s training history, medical background, three days of food records, and growth charts. I reviewed everything and returned a detailed written report that functioned as a risk assessment across four domains: nutritional intake, growth and development, performance, and injury history.
It was not a quick form to fill out. Families had to find growth charts, keep food journals, and complete our intake questionnaire. And all 15 families who purchased completed it in full. That level of engagement told me something important: these parents already sensed something was off.
I will say upfront: I was not shocked by what we found. After years of working with gymnasts and reviewing growth records, I had a fairly clear picture of what to expect. But seeing it confirmed across 15 consecutive audits in a single month was still striking.
Ten of the fifteen gymnasts, two-thirds of the group, had already fallen off their expected growth curve. This is one of the clearest early signals that a gymnast’s body is not receiving adequate nutrition to support both training demands and normal growth and development simultaneously.
Here is why this matters so much in young athletes specifically:
The body prioritises growth and development in children and adolescents. When nutrition is insufficient to meet all of the body’s needs, growth begins to slow or stall before other symptoms appear. By the time a growth curve starts to deviate, the body has typically been under-resourced for a meaningful period of time, which also means it has been unable to fully repair and recover from the accumulated demands of training.
What makes this especially frustrating is that many of these families had raised their concerns with their paediatrician, only to be reassured that everything was fine. The challenge is that most paediatricians, and even some endocrinologists, are not trained to assess growth in the context of high-level gymnastics training.
A gymnast’s body composition and training load are genuinely different from those of a typical child, and standard benchmarks do not always apply. Any meaningful deviation from a gymnast’s own established growth trajectory deserves a closer look, regardless of where she falls on a standard percentile chart.
The average training load across these 15 gymnasts was roughly 20 hours per week. That is not the upper end of what we typically see. We regularly work with gymnasts training 25 to 30 hours per week, and at that volume, the nutritional demands are even higher. But 20 hours per week is still an enormous physical output, particularly for a growing child or adolescent.
And yet two-thirds of these gymnasts, training at that volume, were falling meaningfully short of what their bodies needed.
This matters for parents of gymnasts at levels five, six, seven, and eight who have told themselves that the training is not intense enough yet to be a serious nutrition concern. The data we saw does not support that. If your gymnast is training 20 or more hours per week at any level and has a picky appetite, an irregular eating schedule, or a history of skipping meals around practice, the risk of underfueling is real, and it starts earlier than most people expect.
The majority of the gymnasts in this audit had already experienced significant overuse injuries: stress fractures, stress reactions, and recurring joint problems. Several had symptoms consistent with elbow OCD (osteochondritis dissecans), a condition we see frequently in prepubescent gymnasts around ages 10 to 12, often at levels five through eight.
Every single gymnast we have evaluated for this condition has also been meaningfully behind in growth and development. That pattern is not a coincidence. Bones, cartilage, and soft tissue require consistent and adequate nutritional support to develop properly and to withstand repetitive loading. When that support is not there, the structure of the joint itself becomes vulnerable.
Overuse injuries in young gymnasts are not simply a training volume problem. Nutrition is almost always part of the picture, and in most cases, the underfueling has been present for years before the injury becomes visible. One of the most important shifts in our thinking over the years is how early intervention matters. When we first launched The Balanced Gymnast Program, I will be honest: I assumed that level five and six gymnasts were probably fine. The training hours seemed manageable. The competition demands were not yet extreme. Surely the nutrition concerns would show up later, at level eight, nine, or ten.
I was wrong. And the gymnasts we have worked with have shown us why.
Underfueling is insidious because it does not always look like a crisis from the outside. A gymnast can appear healthy, train consistently, and continue competing while her body is quietly accumulating a deficit that it cannot sustain long-term.
By the time we see level eight, nine, and ten gymnasts with significant injury histories, it is often clear when we look back at their records that the underfueling started at level five or six. The hole digs itself gradually. Growth slows. Recovery becomes incomplete. The body adapts in ways that mask the problem until something finally gives, usually an injury that is disproportionate to what actually happened, or a performance plateau that does not respond to extra training.
The gymnasts who are most at risk are those who already have appetite challenges layered on top of high training demands: picky eaters, gymnasts with ADHD who are on appetite-suppressing medication, gymnasts managing food allergies or intolerances, and gymnasts with anxiety around food. When any of these factors are already present and 20-plus hours of weekly training is added on top, the gap between what they are eating and what they need becomes very difficult to close without targeted support.
One of the most common frustrations we hear from gymnastics parents is that they raised concerns with their child’s paediatrician and were told everything looked normal. No weight loss. Not at a low percentile. Growth curve looks fine. Nothing to worry about.
The problem is that standard paediatric growth assessment is not designed with the high-level gymnast in mind. These athletes have different body compositions, different training loads, and different nutritional demands than the population for which most growth benchmarks were developed. A gymnast who has quietly slipped from the 60th to the 45th percentile over 18 months may not trigger any alarm bells in a standard appointment. But in our work, that kind of shift is worth investigating.
Underfueling in this population also does not always present as a single clear symptom. It shows up across systems: growth, mood, energy, focus, joint health, and immune function. In a standard healthcare model where each of those concerns might be referred to a different specialist, the common root is easy to miss. That is why a nutrition assessment that looks at the gymnast as a whole, across training demands, growth history, injury pattern, and daily fueling, gives a much clearer picture than any single clinical appointment.
I want to address something directly, because it came up in these audits, and it comes up in nearly every conversation we have with families who are on the fence about getting nutrition support.
Gymnastics is expensive. Most families we work with are spending significantly on tuition, competition fees, leotards, travel, private lessons, and all the other costs that come with this sport. Nutrition coaching can feel like one more line item on an already stretched budget.
But here is the reframe that I think matters. When a gymnast is healthy and consistently training, you get a full return on every dollar you spend on the sport. Coaching sessions, competition entries, uniforms, travel, all of it serves its purpose. When a gymnast is injured and out for weeks or months, a significant portion of that investment is lost. And the medical costs that accompany a serious overuse injury, imaging, specialist visits, physical therapy, and sometimes surgery, often far exceed what nutrition support would have cost.
The gymnasts who are most likely to get a college scholarship are not necessarily the most talented. They are the ones who can stay healthy long enough to develop the skills, consistency, and recruiting visibility that coaches are looking for. Nutrition is the foundation that makes all of the other investments in this sport pay off.
